Most PSLE Maths revision plans look the same. Topics are listed, time is divided among them, and the assumption is that covering everything equally is the responsible approach. The logic is understandable. The problem is that not all topics carry the same weight. Five years of PSLE Maths papers show which ones dominate, what Paper 2 actually demands beneath those topic labels, and how revision time should be allocated.

Three Things Every PSLE Maths Paper 2 Has Asked for Over a Decade
Parents new to PSLE Maths Paper 2 often ask what it tests and how it differs from Paper 1. The weightage shifts from year to year, but three structural demands of Paper 2 have stayed constant. Every paper has tested multi-step reasoning, requiring students to decide which approach to use before attempting the question. And every paper has drawn the majority of its marks from the same dominant clusters: Measurement, Numbers, and Ratio & Percentage.
Understanding those demands makes more sense once those constants are clear.
The Topic Cluster That Has Dominated PSLE Maths Paper 2
Measurement has been the largest component of Paper 2 over the past five years, averaging 30% of the marks from 2021 to 2025. Numbers follows at 21.2%, and Ratio & Percentage at 16.4%. Together, these three clusters account for more than two-thirds of Paper 2 marks in a typical year.
Statistics sits in the second tier at a 14.8% five-year average, but its weightage has moved: 12% in both 2021 and 2025, rising to 19% in 2023. That variability is reason enough not to treat it as background preparation. Geometry rounds out the consistently tested clusters at 12.8%.
Algebra and Rate account for the remainder: 3.6% and 1.2% respectively. Present every year, but not where revision time should be concentrated.
The Topics That Have Appeared in Every PSLE Maths Paper 2 (2021–2025)
The topics tested most in PSLE Maths Paper 2 have been consistent across 2021 to 2025. The same seven areas have appeared without exception:
- Measurement (30% average):Â Area and perimeter of composite figures, volume of cubes and cuboids. The single highest-weighted cluster across all five years.
- Numbers (21.2% average):Â Whole number operations through to complex multi-step problem sums.
- Ratio & Percentage (16.4% average):Â Almost always multi-step; frequently combined with Fractions in harder questions.
- Statistics (14.8% average):Â Interpreting tables, bar graphs, pie charts, and calculating averages.
- Geometry (12.8% average):Â Angle properties across triangles, quadrilaterals, and parallel lines.
- Algebra (3.6% average):Â Simple linear equations and expressions.
- Rate (1.2% average):Â The least frequent cluster, but not absent.
Why Topic Weightage Data Only Tells Half the Story
The figures above show which topics come up on Maths Paper 2 and which carry the most marks. That makes them a useful starting point for revision. But there is a limit to what a weightage chart can tell you.
Paper 2 problem sums rarely test one topic in isolation. A question labelled Measurement may require Ratio to set it up and Fractions to complete it. The topic label describes the surface. The concept fusion underneath is what the question actually tests. A child who understands Measurement as a standalone topic but cannot recognise when Ratio is embedded in the working will lose marks that the data suggested were within reach.
This is why the 2026 format change carries more weight than it might appear to. Paper 1 and Paper 2 now carry equal marks for the first time. Paper 1 is no longer the lower-stakes half. The reasoning skills Paper 2 has always demanded now matter across the full exam, not just the second sitting.
What the Data Means for Revision: Practical Starting Points for Parents
The weightage figures are not a revision plan on their own. Here is how to turn them into one:
- Prioritise revision toward the dominant clusters first: Measurement, Numbers, Ratio & Percentage. These are non-negotiable.
- Do not treat Statistics as a gap-fill topic. Its weightage has shifted upward, and it requires a specific skill set: reading and interpreting data accurately under time pressure.
- Covering a topic is not the same as being able to apply it under Paper 2 conditions. The goal is concept understanding, not topic completion.
- For Paper 2 specifically: practise recognising which concepts a problem sum draws on before attempting to solve it. That recognition is the skill the exam is built around.
For any child looking to ace PSLE Maths, Fractions deserve particular attention early in the revision cycle. They surface across Numbers, Ratio, and Percentage questions alike, and a gap there compounds across the paper.
Is PSLE Maths Getting Harder? The Honest Answer
The topic distribution across the last five years has been broadly stable. What has shifted is the emphasis on application and reasoning over procedural recall, which is a deliberate direction in the MOE curriculum. The paper does not cover harder topics. It asks more demanding questions in terms of the thinking they require. The implication for preparation is specific: working through the right material in the right sequence produces different results from covering all topics at equal depth.
